Jammu is compact enough that most of its schooling sits inside a handful of neighbourhoods, with JKBOSE and CBSE schools standing a few streets apart in Gandhi Nagar, Trikuta Nagar, Bakshi Nagar and Channi Himmat. A good number of families also come in from Udhampur, Samba, R.S. Pura and the belt below Katra, where an evening class means a road journey and online tuition does more of the work than it would in a bigger city. Teaching mode is usually the first thing to settle with a tutor here, ahead of subject, class or fee.
Because the two boards sit side by side, and because service and government postings move families through the cantonment side around Nanak Nagar and Sainik Colony, a fair number of children here change board part-way through school. That gap is not a weakness in the student. It is a mismatch between two syllabi, and it normally sits in a few specific chapters rather than across a whole subject. Ask a tutor which board they have actually taught, and for which classes: someone comfortable with the JKBOSE paper is not automatically ready for a CBSE one, and the reverse holds just as firmly.
Winter is the other thing to plan for rather than discover. Evenings close in early, travel gets slower, and a family perfectly happy with home visits in September often wants the same lessons online by January — much easier to agree at the start than to lose a month to. After Class 10 the question in many Jammu homes becomes whether the child leaves the state for coaching at all. Where they stay, a private tutor is generally taking one entrance subject alongside the board syllabus rather than the whole of it.
