Patna's competitive-exam culture starts early. By Class 9 or 10 a lot of students are already sitting in a batch off Boring Road or in Kankarbagh with a hundred others in the room, and a home tutor is usually what a family adds when that stops working for one subject, or when a BSEB student needs the school syllabus covered properly alongside it. Home tuition runs across Kankarbagh, Rajendra Nagar, Patliputra Colony, Bailey Road and Ashiana Nagar, in person and online.
For many families it begins earlier still. Preparing for the residential school entrances — Navodaya, Sainik School, Simultala — is ordinary here from Class 5 and 6, and those papers ask for something school work does not: reasoning and mental arithmetic against a clock, on a pattern the class teacher is not preparing anyone for. That is a different hire from a tutor for the school syllabus, so it is worth saying which of the two you want when you first write to someone.
Where a child is already in a batch, be clear about what the tutor is being added for. A class of a hundred can teach a chapter; it cannot tell you which two chapters your child never followed, and the evidence for that sits in their own test papers rather than in the total at the bottom of them. Timing needs settling too, since batches here take the early morning and the late evening and what is left over is awkward. And ask which board a tutor has taught. BSEB and CBSE set different papers and reward different answers, and a tutor who has only ever prepared students for one of them will teach the other the wrong way round.
