Surat takes in families from across the country for its textile and diamond trade, and children often arrive part-way through a school year, moving from one state's board and sometimes one language of instruction into GSEB or CBSE here. Catching up in that situation is a different job from ordinary tuition — the gap was created by a syllabus mismatch, not by the student, and it usually sits in specific chapters rather than across the whole subject.
Language is often tangled up in it. In a lot of Surat households the language spoken at home is not the one the textbook is printed in, so a child works through a subject in their second or third language while being marked as though it were their first. A tutor who can explain in the language the child thinks in, and then drill the answer in the language the exam is written in, is doing two jobs in the same hour — worth asking about directly rather than assuming.
The city's hours are set by the trade as much as by the school. In families working the markets the usual evening slot is not always free, and lessons settle late at night or before school instead, which is better said out loud in the first conversation than discovered in the third week. Surat is also quicker to cross than the bigger metros: tutors teach in Adajan, Pal, Vesu, Piplod, Athwalines, Katargam, Varachha and Udhna, in person and online, so a tutor from a neighbouring area remains a realistic weekly arrangement here in a way it is not in Mumbai or Delhi.
