Class 1 is the year school stops looking like play. There is a bench and a bell, a notebook that has to be copied into, and homework that exists for the first time — and for a six-year-old most of the difficulty sits in that change rather than in anything on the page.
The commonest real problem is writing speed. A child who follows the lesson perfectly well but writes slowly falls behind the board, copies half a sum, and takes an hour over ten minutes of homework. To a teacher managing a full class that can look like weakness in the subject when it is pencil grip, posture and practice, all of which respond quickly to someone sitting alongside for a few weeks.
So if you engage a tutor in Class 1, the honest goal is habit rather than syllabus: a fixed half hour at the same time each day, the bag packed the night before, homework finished without a fight. The content at this level rarely needs repair. The routine around it often does.
