Class 7 is the year school work stops rewarding recall on its own. Maths moves into integers, rational numbers and simple equations, where the answer counts for less than the steps that produced it. Science starts asking why something happens rather than what it is called.
The gap that opens here is between getting an answer and being able to show how — and a report card hides that gap for a while, because a student copying a method can still score well on a familiar sum. It usually becomes visible a year or two later, on a question phrased in a way they have not seen before.
Catching it does not need a full timetable of tuition. One subject, with a tutor willing to make a student explain a step back rather than hand over another worksheet, is generally enough at this age.
