English is the subject where the school rarely tells you what is actually wrong. The marks come back low and the advice is to read more. But low marks in English have at least four different causes: the unseen passage, where the answer has to be inferred rather than copied out; grammar, which is rule-based and quite fixable; the writing section, where format and length take marks before content does; and literature, where students retell the story instead of answering the question asked.

Each of those needs a different kind of work, so the first job is separating them, and that only happens when someone reads several pieces of a student's own writing rather than a total out of eighty. It is worth doing early. English is compulsory in every stream, so a weak paper pulls down the aggregate no matter what a student is otherwise strong at, and it is one of the few subjects where a habit corrected in Class 8 is still paying in Class 12.
