GATE is written in one discipline paper — computer science, mechanical, electrical, civil and the rest — alongside a general aptitude section, with engineering mathematics in most papers. The syllabus is the candidate's own undergraduate degree examined a second time, which makes tutor experience unusually specific: someone who has taught the mechanical paper is not automatically useful for the computer science one.
The score also does two different jobs. It is used for admission to postgraduate engineering programmes, and it is used by public sector undertakings as a recruitment filter, so two people sitting the same paper can be working towards quite different outcomes.
Preparation is usually fitted around final-year coursework or a full-time job, and the difficulty is breadth rather than depth: several years of subjects to bring back, most of them last opened a long while ago. One-to-one time tends to go on the two or three subjects a candidate never fully followed the first time, and on engineering mathematics, which carries across the paper and is easy to postpone until it is too late.
