Kindergarten goes by different names depending on the school — LKG and UKG, Junior and Senior KG, KG1 and KG2 — but the work behind the label is much the same. Letter sounds rather than letter names, blending those sounds into short words, counting real objects instead of reciting numbers in order, and persuading a pencil to stay between two lines.
This is also the year parents begin comparing children, usually at somebody's birthday party. Children start reading at genuinely different ages, and one who blends sounds a year later than the child next door is not behind in any way that lasts. The honest reasons to bring in a tutor at this stage are narrower than the anxiety suggests: a home language different from the classroom language, or a child who freezes in a group and does better one-to-one before trying the group again.
If you do, keep it short. Sessions at this age work in the twenty-to-thirty minute range and should be built around talking, stories and games rather than worksheets. A tutor who cannot teach that way is the wrong tutor for a five-year-old, whatever else they know.
