Two quiet shifts happen in Class 2, and they happen at the same time. Reading stops being about getting each word out and starts being about holding the whole sentence — a child can read a paragraph aloud without a single mistake and still not be able to say what happened in it. In maths, numbers stop being things you count: tens and ones, carrying and borrowing all assume a child can picture 34 as three tens and a four, not as thirty-four separate objects.
Neither of these announces itself. Nothing is failed and nobody is told. The child just reads slowly, takes longer over homework, and begins saying they do not like maths. Half the value of a tutor at this stage is working out which of the two it actually is, because slow reading makes a word problem look like a maths difficulty when it is not one.
Most Class 2 tuition is about keeping pace, not catching up. Twenty focused minutes of reading aloud on most days tends to do more than one long session at the weekend.
