Class 12 asks a student to prepare for two different kinds of paper in the same year. A board paper rewards completeness and presentation: the full derivation, the diagram labelled, the answer set out the way the marking scheme expects. An entrance paper rewards speed and selection, and gives nothing for method. Preparing well for one is not preparing for the other.

That, more than the difficulty of the content, is what makes the year hard. Most students who come unstuck in Class 12 are not stuck on every subject; they let one drift while the other has their attention, usually a board subject sacrificed to entrance preparation, and find out where they actually stand at the pre-boards.

A tutor at this stage is generally hired for a narrow job: hold up the subject that is slipping, or give entrance-level problem-solving the time a coaching batch moves too fast to allow. It is worth asking which of the two a tutor has done before, and for which board, because they are different pieces of work.
