Science in middle school is one subject on the timetable and three on the question paper. Physics, chemistry and biology arrive in rotation, often from different teachers, and the single Science mark averages them into a number that says nothing useful. A child can be entirely comfortable with the biology chapters and quietly lost from the day symbols and equations started in chemistry, and the report card will read the same either way.
This is also the stage where the subject stops being descriptive. Answers begin to need reasoning rather than recall, numericals appear in physics, and chemistry asks students to work in a notation nobody used with them before. Whatever is left half-understood here does not get revisited — Class 9 and 10 build straight on top of it, and Class 11 simply assumes it. A tutor who teaches all three parts at this level can tell which one is dragging the mark down, which is exactly what a combined score cannot show.
