Engineering tuition at degree level is a different job from school tuition. The unit here is a single semester subject — Engineering Mathematics, Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Signals and Systems, Data Structures, Machine Design — and the student usually arrives with one specific paper standing between them and a clear semester.
Two things make this harder to arrange than school tuition. The syllabus is set by the university, so a subject with the same name is not the same paper at two colleges, and the pace is fixed by the semester rather than the year, so there is very little room to recover in. Much of this teaching is therefore short and concentrated: a few weeks before the exam, or a backlog paper being cleared alongside a full current semester.
The question to put to a tutor is narrow. Not whether they teach engineering, but whether they have taught this subject at this level, whether they know the pattern this university sets, and whether they are willing to work through past papers and numericals rather than deliver the lectures again. First-year subjects and mathematics-heavy papers are the ones students most often look for help with.
